Born in Guatemala City and brought to Las Vegas at the age of ten, Jorge began his new life with his family in a small apartment near Eastern and Bonanza, where he and his younger brother watched their parents work and sacrifice to create opportunities they had only dreamed of.
He earned a bachelor's degree in communication studies and a master's degree in education from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. For more than 20 years he has served others, much of that at a predominantly Hispanic private school where he grew into the role of principal and served for more than a decade.
His connection to this city's workforce is personal. His mother worked as a casino porter at The Mirage for more than 20 years. His father arrived with a degree in civil engineering, set aside the profession he trained for, worked as a bus person at the Stardust, and eventually opened a transmission shop he ran for more than 15 years.
“Behind the dazzling lights, celebrity chefs, world-famous resorts and headline entertainment are thousands of hardworking people who make this city run every single day. They are housekeepers, porters, cooks, servers, construction workers, drivers, technicians and countless others who work with their hands, provide for their families, and build lives in this community.”
